Shipping container reuse is becoming prevalent internationally as a small space design tactic. All over the world are leftover containers that need a use, otherwise they go to the landfill. A more ecological approach to recycling these containers is to reuse them as buildings.

Project Timeline: Fall of 2019

Location: Gosnold, MA

Software: Revit, Photoshop

Project Scope: To program and design one 40 x 8 x 9 and two 20 x 8 x 9 shipping containers.

Solution: There is a plethora of local artists that reside there and I thought creating an art gallery to showcase their works would be both entertaining to tourists and help the locals financially.

Context

Cuttyhunk island (where the building is theoretically located) is off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. The island is perfect for the outdoorsy family vacationing there during the summers but it lacks tourist attraction which shows in the islands economic state.

Site Plan

The studio is located on the outskirts of the Avalon property. The Avalon is the only bed and breakfast on the island, thus the majority of tourists stay here. Positioning the studio on the edge of the cliff not only gives great views for painting also creates natural ventilation in the summer months.

The bottom shipping container holds the art gallery. This art gallery has a bathroom along with a mini kitchenette for food prep for the sip and paint classes. The top shipping containers have a wine bar as well as a painting studio. This studio has views of both the island as well as the ocean.
